Funders are asking for sustainability and these agencies are delivering it at a lower cost. Here are just a few examples.
City of Campbell, CA saves 50% of lifetime costs for construction. Their Hacienda Avenue Project earned a Greenroads Silver Rating and is federally funded. We are not kidding - literally enough to build the same road twice!
City of Bothell and WSDOT Local Programs saved 37% on maintenance costs, investing with the future in mind and stretching that dollar twice as long. Double the lifetime, 19% savings overall. Not a bad deal!
City of San Jose, CA saves 23% over conventional alternative on a 2 mile road. That's literally enough to pave 1/2 mile somewhere else!
City of Kirkland, WA saves about $4000 using warm mix asphalt. Kirkland earned the highest rating to date on any project and is federal, state and city funded.
City of Bellingham saved 78% on stormwater management costs upfront retrofitting CBD streets for less than $1 milion, and the system will cost half as much over its lifetime. Listen to a podcast about other Bellingham projects.
So far, all Certified Greenroads projects have come in at or below budget and no project's costs have increased specifically because of choices made to participate in Greenroads.
The idea that sustainability costs more is a myth. Smart owners, especially those with green building and LEED experience, know that green saves money and that the cost of proving it with a certification commitment is negligible compared to the total project budget.
