Description

SW Macadam Ave, or Oregon Route 43, runs along the west side of the Willamette River near Portland, Oregon. As part of the Sellwood Bridge Replacement, the interchange between the new bridge and OR 43 was upgraded to a grade-separated, signalized interchange. The new interchange extends the pedestrian and bicycle routes on the bridge by including intersection improvements and connections to nearby regional trails.

Features

The sustainable features of the interchange project focus on connecting the multimodal facilities of the new Sellwood bridge to the transportation networks on the west side of the Willamette River. In addition, the project incorporated stormwater treatment, landscaping, and ecological improvements. Specific sustainability features of the Project include:

  • Intersection enhancements such as crosswalks and bicycle signals
  • Pedestrian and bicycle ramps connecting to regional trail system 
  • Wayfinding signage for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Bus stops and dedicated bus pullouts
  • Vegetated swales for treatment of runoff from OR 43 and Sellwood Bridge
  • Replacement of pipe culverts withe large precast concrete arch to improve fish passage in Stephens Creek
