Selection Criteria

Here are some tips on what we are generally looking for when we select projects with the pre-screening process, in order of most important to least important:

1. Owner-agency approval of the application.
   
2. The majority of project funding is secured.
   
3. Enthusiasm and responsiveness of applicant.
   

*Note that projects that have started construction or are complete prior to release of the v1.5 version of the Manual (2/4/11) may have a difficult time achieving certification for some common reasons:

• Greenroads wasn't fully developed when the project was designed, so documentation needed for certification is usually hard to find or is non-existent and would need to be generated. (Costs money and man-hours).
  
• No one can find the contractor anymore or the contractor is incommunicado.
  
• The project has a fixed cost and didn't allocate money or a contingency for sustainability reviews (or for paying the contractor and consultants to go back and provide documents for the projects), so money allocated was already spent.
  

Generally, we suggest that these projects are approached as Pilot Project reviews first. Several projects that have applied have used older versions of the Manual as a guide do end up being successful and choosing to pursue certification after the results of the Pilot Project are received. Here is an example of one that did just this. Pilot Project reviews serve as an excellent benchmarking tool.
