CC-3: Design for Disassembly

1-5 point

Goal

Design structures to be easily disassembled for partial or whole reuse, salvage or other form of repurposing at end of their service life.

Requirements

Design structures such that disassembly is facilitated. A formal disassembly manual must include:

  1. Names, weights and origination of all components.
  2. Loading and structural design information (maximum design strength, allowable traffic loading, etc.)
  3. Additives used in construction, if any.
  4. Component handling requirements.
  5. Potential destination of component (abandon, reuse in place, recycling facility, landfill, salvage yard).
  6. A list of tools and equipment required for disassembly.
  7. A step-by-step description of the disassembly process.
  8. A list of other relevant construction documents and where to find them.

Materials destined for abandonment or landfill may not be included in the calculation for additional points. For additional points, demonstrate the percentage of total materials that are planned for disassembly according to the formal disassembly manual.

Documentation

A copy of the deconstruction plans and instructions for the structure. Show calculations that demonstrate percentages of material (by weight) that are intended to be deconstructable.
