A Greenroad Is The Way to San Jose

We are very excited about the start of construction for our first project in the State of California! The Monterey Road Project is part of the City of San Jose's 2010 Surface Transportation Program. The primary purpose of the project is to rehabilitate the existing roadway that connects with historic El Camino Real. The existing section was built in 1912 but has been travelled since the late 17th century.

About the Project

The existing project pavement has been considered one of the worst in the state for travelers. Construction work includes pavement reconstruction using cold-in-place recycling of the existing pavement with a hot-mix asphalt overlay, and some spot improvements at various intersections and sidewalks. The wearing course will also be made with asphalt partly derived from recycled rubber tires (this is the main emphasis of the State of California's Green Roads program - we love the name!).

Notable Efforts

Some of our most interesting project stories we have had about Greenroads Certification have come from the Monterey Road Project Team. We especially like to highlight the collaborative effort put forward by the Infrastructure Maintenance Division to connect with other City divisions outside of their general focus area (pavements and ROW maintenance).

IMD has successfully partnered with the Environmental Services Department to complete a feasibility study for Low Impact Development stormwater solutions. They also connected with the Traffic Signal Systems Division to get light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights installed too! We love this project as an example because it demonstrates that, with minimal effort, even simple overlay projects can successfully become more sustainable in very easy ways.
